FAQ

What is the goal of FemAI?

FemAI aims to create Artificial Intelligence that is more equitable and accountable. We focus particularly on preventing discrimination against women and marginalized groups, while also addressing regulatory compliance and the environmental impact of AI systems. By integrating an intersectional perspective into AI system development, we strive to identify biases in algorithms before they can harm society, thereby promoting social justice in the digital world.

Why is it important for companies to take responsibility when using Artificial Intelligence?

A study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) shows that companies that handle AI responsibly experience nearly 30% fewer AI errors compared to those that don’t. Responsible AI use also brings significant business advantages: companies with mature Responsible AI (RAI) programs, regardless of their technical maturity, are twice as likely to deliver better products and services or accelerate innovation. Moreover, consumer trust has been identified as a key factor for business performance, explaining 31% of the variance in profit margins and 21% in return on investment.

What is the significance of the EU AI Act for fair and safe AI?

The EU AI Act is the first comprehensive law to regulate Artificial Intelligence in the EU. It categorizes AI technologies based on their risk and sets requirements for their use, aiming to protect consumers and minimize the risks associated with AI while promoting responsible innovation. However, FemAI has been actively involved in the EU AI Act process and criticizes the law’s approach to social and environmental justice. Certain protection requirements, such as the Code of Conduct, remain voluntary. To minimize potential harms from AI, such as deepfakes or discriminatory facial recognition, more effective methods have been developed by FemAI in collaboration with our unique ecosystem.

Why are women and marginalized groups particularly affected by AI discrimination?

AI-driven decisions often rely on historical data that reflect societal biases, which are also embedded in AI policies and business decision-making processes. As a result, women and marginalized groups are often overlooked or disadvantaged due to a combination of historical, social, and economic factors embedded in the data that AI-driven systems use. A clear example is credit scoring: AI systems frequently favor men due to biased data, providing them with better evaluations. This is closely tied to the Gender Pay Gap and factors such as the fact that 40% of women in Germany work part-time, creating metrics in AI systems that may lead to automatic discrimination against women. Such discriminatory practices in AI usage exacerbate existing social inequalities.
